History of Studebaker motor car company
History of Studebaker motor car company started when John Studebaker together with his five sons - Henry, Clement, John Mohler, Peter Everst and Jacob Franklin formed a successful business with the production of wagons. Their relatives - sons and son-in laws, continued to run the business after their deaths.

The following company information and history timeline details the dates of major events which influenced the growth of the business.

1895 Fred Fish (son-in-law to John Mohler) wanted to develop a carriage that would not require a horse in order to transport it.

1897-1904 Fred Fish becomes Chairman of the executive committee. The production of gasoline powered autos begins with the partnership of Garford in 1904.

1905-1911 Vehicles were sold under Studebaker-Garford. Garford engines were given the Studebaker name. Garford also made their own vehicles and after being discovered for trying to increase their own sales through Studebaker, they were dropped - the last vehicle was produced in 1911.

1908 Studebaker formed an agreement with E-M-F Company. Studebaker would sell the vehicles manufactured by E-M-F Company through their wagon dealers. The cars were not a success, they were powered by gasoline and they were not reliable. The rear axle being the most common fault. Fred Fish purchased the E-M-F manufacturing plants in Ontario, Canada.

1911 The Studebaker Corporation was formed. The production of electric vehicles was terminated. Engineers visited dissatisfied customers from the time that cars had been produced by E-M-F.

1913-1919 The six cylinder models were developed with monobloc engine casting. Fred M Zeder became chief engineer. The new developments were launched in 1918 with the help of two technicians Carl Breer and Owen R Skelton. In 1915, Fred Fish was replaced by Albert Russel Erskine. Fred M Zeder also left the company, and Guy P Henry became the new chief engineer. He was responsible for the introduction of molybdenum steel. The final wagon was produced in 1919. The six cylinder engines were used in the production of fire engines, buses and small rail locomotives.

1925 -1945 Paul G Hoffman became vice president of Studebaker. The Erskine Six was introduced, followed by other models. Sales increase during this period and the company saw a lot of success, however, the Great Depression arrived and this affected employment within the company, resulting in many workers being laid off. Sales decreased rapidly, people couldn't even afford to buy small vehicles during the depression. It wasn't until 1933 that the Studebaker company was back on track and regained financial stability. Vehicles including the M29 Weasel cargo and personnel carrier and the Studebaker US6 truck were introduced during World War II.

1947-1966 The Studebaker Starlight coupe and Studebaker Champion Starlight coupes were produced. Sales and the success of Studebaker began to decrease. Models such as the compact Lark and the Avanti sports cars were redeveloped, however, it seemed that the Studebaker Motor Car Company could not be saved. Production ended in 1966.
