History of Smart motor car company
The following
company information and history timeline details
the dates of major events which influenced the
growth of the business:
The history of Smart car company is really
interesting as the idea of this unique two
seater microcar actually came about towards the
end of the 1980s, but wasn't developed until
1994! The idea came from Nicolas Hayek who was
CEO of Swatch (abbreviated to SMH). Swatch
produced watches and Hayek wanted to develop a
new brand of cars and market them in the same
way as the popular Swatch watch - Swatchmobile
was the name given to this idea! Hayek detected
a potential gap in the car market with a
requirement for a small, economical city
vehicle. Hayek engineering AG was Hayek's
company, and it was through this company that
the design of the small city car for SMH
commenced.
Hayek decided
to form partnership with an automotive company
in order to produce and market the microcars.
This would reduce the pressure of covering all
costs and market competition for SMH. Volkwagen
originally agreed in 1991, however, Ferdinand
Piech stopped production in 1993 when he became
CEO for VW. The producer of Mercedes-Benz cars,
Daimler-Benz AG formed an agreement, and on 4th
March, 1994, they made an announcement that
Micro Compact Car AG would launch. Micro Compact
Car AG was abbreviated to MCC. It was at this
time that the design and production of the car
and a hybrid electric drive system were
implimented. The head quarters for MCC were set
up in Biel, Switzerland. The name smart derived
from an acronym of Swatch Mercedes Art. The
Smart cars was introduced, followed by the Smart
coupe and Crossblade, Smart K, Smart Roadster,
Smart Forfour, and Smart Fortwo. The
introduction of the Roadster and Forfour (supermini)
didn't increase company profits. MCC had already
bought out the remainder of SMH's stake so MCC
were not the sole owners, under the division of
Daimler-Benz. Roadster production came to an end
in 2005 following a loss of company profits.
Smart operates under Mercedes-Benz Cars division
of Daimler AG.
