Founding of the Renault motor car company
In which year was the company founded? The Renault motor car company was founded by engineer Louis Renault on 25th February, 1899. This is a successful French car manufacturer that provides a vast range of vehicles to suit the demands of the consumer. Their clientele is vast as Renault produces not only economical everyday family cars, but also high performance, concept, fast, sporty and cool cars for motorsports! They introduced the turbo engine to Formula One with the introduction of the Renault RS01 in 1977. The vehicles produced by Renault over the years include cars, trucks, vans, tractors, tanks, buses, coaches and autorail vehicles. Their most popular cars include the Renault Megane and the Renault Clio. This famous car producer is connected closely with Nissan making this powerful combination one of the biggest car manufacturers.
History of Renault motor car company
The following company information and history timeline details the dates of major events which influenced the growth of the business:
1899-1906 Louis Renault, assisted by his brothers Fernand and Marcel founded The Renault Corporation - known as Societe Renault Freres. The first car produced was the Renault Voiturette which was bought by a family friend whom was very impressed by the small car. The brothers became involved in racing, but unfortunately Marcel died as a result of a racing accident in 1903 - The Paris to Madrid Race. Fernand retired in 1906 which left Louis to maintain business on his own.
1914-1918 Renault assisted with war efforts producing materials used for war, parts for military aircrafts and of course the incredible design of the Renault FT-17 tank! Louis Renault was in actual fact awarded Legion of Honour for his efforts and contribution towards the war.
1919-1938 Time were difficult for Renault after the war as the people's car proved popular and tough competition. They started to change the appearance of the front of their vehicles over the years. Originally due to the positioning of the radiator. In 1925, Renault changed their bonnet badge to a diamond shape. Lots of different ranges of cars of all sizes were produced during these years including a 6cv, 10cv, 15cv, 18/22cv and 40cv - all varying in size. The Reinastella and Suprastella were built. The de Grand Luxe Renaults were introduced, designed with six and eight cylinder engines. These vehicles had wheelbases that were 12 foot plus. Such models included NM, PI an PZ. The Grand Renaults required a lot of aluminium for their production - many of them were scrapped as a contribution to war efforts.
1939-1944 Renault's Billancourt Plant was bombed after the war following Louis Renault's refusal to build tanks for Nazi Germany - instead Renault built tanks for German occupiers. The factory bombing resulted in a great deal of damage and many casualties. Renault quickly began repairs only for the factory to receive further damage in a second bombing a year later by the Americans. It wasn't until Sept, 1944 that the factory reopened at Billancourt. There was a great deal of political debate during this time. The government assigned a new administrator with management and engineer background - his name was Pierre Lefaucheux. Accusations were made against Louis Renault by the provisional government who claimed he had been collaborating with the Germans. Louis Renault's lawyers advised him to remain in the country and to present himself to a judge. He did this on 22nd Sept, 1944 and was arrested the following day. Louis Renault died on 24th October, 1944 in Fresnes Prison whilst awaiting trial, the circumstances regarding his death remain unclear.
1945-1971 Pierre Lefaucheux introduced the developed 4CV - Louis Renault had worked on the rear engine 4CV during the war in secret. Lefaucheeux the launched an executive car known as the Renault Fregate. Production was good until 1961 as the engine proved to be good competition amongst its rivals which included the VW Beetle and the Morris Minor. The Dauphine was produced, this was an economy car which proved popular, it was sold in other areas of the world including North America and Africa. The Renault 4, 8, 10, 16 and 6 were introduced.
1972-1987 The Renault 5 was introduced in 1972 followed by the Renault 12, the R18 and R20 were later produced. During the 70's, Renault produced the R4, R5, R6, R12, R15, R16 and R17. Renault established partnerships with Nash Motors Rambler and American Motors Corporation. The Renault Torino was introduced which was a hybrid vehicle. Renault was branching out across the world and updating their range of vehicles. They developed sporty type cars and coupes. American Motors faced financial difficulties which resulted in Renault investing a lot of money in order to help the company out and consequently forming the Renault-AMC partnership. Together they marketed jeep vehicles across Europe. The Renault Alliance GTA and a convertible version were produced, followed by the Encore. Renault became increasingly successful in the United States, however, sales took a drop following complaints that their vehicles were of poor quality. The Renault Espace was launched in 1984, this was actually the first mulit-purpose minivan of its kind to be launched across Europe! Renault became very interested in producing cars fits for motorsports during the 70s and 80s. The government assigned a new chairman to Renault in 1985 as the company was spending too much money and needed to make cut backs. Georges Besse, was assassinated on 17th November, 1986 outside his home by the communist terrorist group Action Directe. Raymond Levy became the new chairman and by 1987, Renault had regained financial stability. They sold American Motors to Chrysler in 1987.
1990-2010 During the 1990s, Renault produced some of their most successful and most popular cars including the Clio, second generation Espace, Twingo and Megane which received a four star rating. In 1996, Renault became privatized allowing it to commence production in other areas of the world, such as South America and Eastern Europe. Renault and Nissan formed an alliance in 1999. In 2000, the family car Laguna was introduced 0 this was the first European car with a keyless ignition feature. The Laguna received a five star rating. Renault bought 99% of Dacia, which was a Romanian company. In 2001, Renault Vehicules Industrials truck and bus division was sold to Volvo. Renault-Nissan formed a new alliance with Daimler in 2010.
