In which year was the Porsche company founded?
An engineer from Austria known as Ferdinand Porsche founded the company Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH in 1931. The company didn't produce cars immediately, originally they provided consultancy and vehicle development. In response to the German government's request for a people's car which resulted in Ferdinand Porsche's design of the Volkswagen Beetle. Porsche produced the Porsche 64 1939. During the Second World War they provided design work for heavy military tanks.
1945-1947 The VW Volkswagen factory was taken over by the British. Ferdinand Porsche was the Chairman of the Board of Management for VW but lost the position. He was later imprisoned for 20 months for war crimes for which he had been arrested for but not tried. Ferdinand Porsche was let out of prison in 1947. His son, Ferry Porsche, had maintained important dealings whilst he had been imprisoned. Sadly, Ferdinand Porsche passed away in January 1951 following a stroke.

Due to the small availability of parts for the 345 after the war, parts from the VW Beetle were used. Porsche produced many outstanding models including the Cayenne, Panamera - a luxury, high performance luxurious saloon, Cayman, Boxster roadster, Porsche 550 Spyder which was successfully used to compete in motor racing, Porsche 911 which featured the boxer engine - this model proved to be very popular and was used for racing and rallies. Porsche and VW combined efforts and produced the WV Porsche 914 (with a VW engine) and 914-6 (with a Porsche engine). Ferry Porsche and his eldest son Ferdinand had a great influence over the design and mechanical development of Porsche cars. Ferdinand later became chairman of the Volkswagen Group and remained in this position from 1993 to 2002 before becoming Chairman of the Supervisory Board.
