History of Panther motor car company
The official name for Panther was in actual fact Panther Westwinds. Robert Jankel, born in London in 1938, specialized in the design of armoured cars and limousines, was the man who founded the Panther car company in Surrey, England in 1972. The Panther car shared similarities to the Jaguar, certain types were designed and built with Jaguar engines, and this is the reason that the name Panther suitably derived. The word Westwinds became relevant as it was the name of Robert Jankel's family home. The first car produced was the Panther J72 which was an expensive two seater prototype.
1974 The Panther De Ville was introduced - a very expensive car designed with a Jaguar engine that only the richest of collectors bought.
1975 A luxury saloon named the Panther Rio was produced.
1976 This is the year that saw the production of Panther's most successful auto known as the Panther Lima. This retro style roadster was produced until 1982 - a total of 897 Limas were produced during this time.
1977 A two seater roadster named the Panther 6 was introduced. This luxurious car was so expensive that only two of the Panther 6 were built.
1979 Panther Westwinds produced luxury sports cars which proved popular and successful during the 1970s, however, Panther Westwinds faced difficulties in 1979 which resulted in the collapse of the car company.
1981 Young Chull Kim bought the company in 1981 and the production of DeVille, J72 and Lima recommenced.
1983 The Kallista would replace the Lima, production of this two seater car model began. The year of 1983 also saw the development of a sports vehicle called the Panther Solo.
1987 saw the sale of the interests of Jindo of the Panther Car Company to SsangYong.
1999 SsangYong faced financial complications and the car division became part of Daewoo.
