Founding of the Mitsubishi motor car company
The Mitsubishi group of companies is a
Japanese corporate group, Mitsubishi Keiretsu,
which shares the Mitsubishi brand name and
trademark. Mitsubishi was founded by Iwasaki
Yataro and the company was formerly the largest industrial
group in Japan, formed the Mitsubishi Motors
Corporation on 22nd April 1970. An engineer from
Mitsubishi's aircraft division would lead the
automotive division. The logo or symbol for
Mitsubishi is three red diamonds and this design
was chosen by the founder, Iwasaki Yataro. The
meaning of the word Mitsubishi translates to
three (mitsu) and water chestnut (hishi) a word
used to depict a diamond.

1970, however, the designs and production of
some motors began a lot earlier when Shin
Mitsubishi Heavy-Industries Ltd designed, built
and produced a number of vehicles that would
impact greatly on the future production of
Mitsubishi cars. Shin Mitsubishi
Heavy-Industries Ltd are one of the companies
that would later form part of Mitsubishi Motors.

Mitsubishi produced Japan's first series
production car, the Model A. This car was a
seven seater sedan and it was hand built. Only
twenty-two Model A's were produced due to the
cost of the vehicle being high compared to its
Mitsubishi designed a prototype sedan known as
the PX33. This vehicle was for military purposes
and it was the first car with full time 4 wheel
drive to be produced in Japan. This design would
become important to Mitsubishi further down the
line as it would assist with the production of
vehicles fit for motorsport and off road racing
Mizushima and Silver Pigeon were built, however,
in 1950 Allied power demanded that the
vehicles were dismantled.

Chrysler and Mitsubishi formed Diamond Star
Motors to produce compact and subcompact cars
including Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser and
Mitsubishi Motor Corporation went public.
Chrysler increased its holdings whilst
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries reduced theirs
allowing the company to pay back some of its
debt and to expand its operations to Thailand,
Malaysia and the Philippines.
Mitsubishi was assigned a new president by the
name of Hirokazu Nakamura.
