Founding of the Mercury motor car company
The Mercury motor car company was formed in 1939 by Henry Ford's son, Edsel Ford as an entry level luxury car brand for the Ford Motor Company.
History of Mercury motor car company
Mercury was separate division until 1945 when it was combined with Lincoln to become the Lincoln Mercury Division. Ford hoped Mercury would become effectively a junior Lincoln rather than an upmarket Ford. The Lincoln Mercury Division was merged with the ill fated Edsel brand in 1958 becoming the the Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln Division, in 1960, when the Edsel brand was dropped the division became the Lincoln-Mercury Division.
The Lincoln-Mercury Division produced a line of successful cars separately from Ford until the late 1970's when the two divisions were joined having a negative effect on Mercury's image. Sales peaked in 1978 to 580,000 and again in 1993 to over 480,000, sales sine then have dropped by more than half to around 200,000 annually.
In the mid 1990's Mercury received some very good free PR when country music star Alan Jackson scored a hit with a cover of "Mercury Blues" originally by K.C. Douglas, in which the Mercury range was complimented. Mercury continued to sell what were effectively re-vamped Fords during the following years as "near luxury" cars, although the ride was little more bumpy than would be expected on a more expensive true luxury car.
In 2008 Mercury's range was very much like Ford's and some people believed Mercury would not survive, however Ford claimed they had no intention of dropping the Mercury brand and ended speculation by making Mercury part of it's new small car strategy in July 2008.
