Founding of the Maserati motor car company
In which year was the company founded? The Maserati Motor Car Company was founded in Bologna, on 1st December, 1914 by the Maserati brothers. The brothers - Ernesto, Ettore, Carlo, Bindo and Alfieri, were involved in the production of Maserati race cars. The company is Italian and it is famous for its production of luxury cars, race cars and sports cars. Maserati has been owned by Fiat S. p. A., also an Italian company, from 1993. Maserati is classed within the sports car group alongside other famous sports models including Alfa Romeo. The Maserati Headquarters are now based in Modena, Italy. They were relocated from Bologna in 1940, after the Maserati brothers sold to the Adolfo Orsi family in 1937. The Maserati brothers remained involved with the engineering of the cars. The Maserati emblem is a trident and it is thought that one of the Maserati brothers, who was a artist, may have designed the emblem for the company.

History of Maserati motor car company
History of Maserati motor car company is very interesting as this successful Italian luxury car maker began by designing and producing race cars. They made many types before the Second World War which proved to be very competitive, even when raced against some of the fastest German cars of its time including Mercedes. Once the war broke out, Maserati stopped car production in order to assist in producing components to help aid the Italians. After the war, Maserati once again commenced the production of vehicles. They focused hard on producing the best racing cars with the assistance of top engineers including Alberto Massimino who had worked with Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, Enrico Plate, Gioacchino Colombo, Vittorio Bellentani and Giulio Alrieri. They produced high performance, powerful, fast racing cars that successfully won many races. A famous racing driver from Argentina raced many of the Maserati cars in the 50s, his name was Juan-Manuel Fangio.

1957 - 1967 Maserati begin the production of road cars including the 6 cylinder 3500 2+2 coupe, Vignale bodied Sebring, the Mistral Coupe, the Spider, the Quattroporte and the Ghibli.

1968 - 1972 Citroen takes over the Maserati Motor Car Company in 1968. The amount of cars produced increased and the design of new vehicles was changed. Models such as the Maserati Bora, Merak, Khamsin, Quattroporte II were designed. Citroen used some of the Maserati designs and engines to assist the performance of some of their own vehicles including the rally prepared Citroen DS.

1975- 1992 Maserati goes into administration and is kept afloat by funds from the Italian government. Benelli Motorcycle company takes over Maserati and a former Argentinian racing driver named Alessandro de Tomaso, who ran the Benelli Motorcycle Company, then became head of Maserati. Vehicles such as the Maserati Kyalami and Quattroporte III were produced. Benelli changed the appearance of the cars to more of a square design in the 80s. These vehicles were not as expensive as the previous Maseratis but they were very powerful and high performance vehicles. They were front engined, rear drive coupes and models included the Maserati Biturbo, Karif, Spyder, Racing, Shamal and Ghibli II. Benelli also worked along Chrysler and together they produced the Chrysler TC by Maserati.

1993 Maserati is taken over by Fiat

1997 Ferrari was a sister company to Fiat so Fiat sold 50% of Maserati to Ferrari. Maserati became a luxury division of Ferrari. Many believe that this strategic move saved Maserati from hitting irresolvable financial difficulties.

1998 The Maserati 3200 GT, a two door coupe wiht a 3.2 L twin turbocharged V8 is produced! This high performance, fast, powerful car could reach speeds of 177 miles per hour / 285 kilometres per hour, later replaced by the GranTurismo and GranCabrio.

2005 Fiat moved Maserati from Ferrari and merged the company with Alfa Romeo.
