Founding of the Lotus motor car company
The Company began as Lotus Engineering Ltd,
by engineer Colin Chapman.
History of Lotus motor car company
Colin Chapman's first
factory was in an old stables behind a Railway
Hotel in Hornsey. Team Lotus split
from Lotus Engineering in 1954, and from 1958 to
1994, they were competitive in Formula One
racing. In 1959 the Lotus Group of companies was
formed and in 1959 Lotus moved from Hornsey to a purpose
built factory in Cheshunt. In 1966 the company
purchased a second factory and
road test facility in Hethel near Wymondham, the
new factory is built on an ex RAF base and
utilises parts of the old runway in it's test
track.
Colin Chapman past away in 1982 due to a heart
attack at the age of 54, Colin Chapman ended his
life as a multi millionaire due to his success
in
building thousands of successful cars for both
road and race, his racing cars
won the Formula One World Championships seven
times. At the time of Colin Chapman's death, he
was linked to a scandal over the use of
government subsidies for the production of the
DeLorean
DMC-12 which Lotus had designed the chassis
.
The company was bought in 1986 by
General
Motors, then on the 27th August, 1993,
General
Motors sold Lotus to A.C.B.N. Holdings S.A. of
Luxembourg for £30 million, a company controlled
by Romano Artioli, an Italian businessman. A
majority share in Lotus was sold in 1996 to
Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd (Proton),
Lotus was reorganised into Lotus Cars and Lotus
Engineering. In
May 2006, Michael Kimberley took over as Acting
Chief Executive Officer over the
Lotus groups.
Michael Kimberley retired as CEO on the 17th
July, 2009. Dany T Bahar, formerly Senior Vice
President of Commercial & Brand for
Ferrari
Spa, for witch he was responsible for worldwide
road car sales and after sales business, overall
road car and F1 marketing activities, licensing
and merchandising business, took over as CEO for
Lotus on the 1st October, 2009.
