Leyland was founded in 1968 and ran until 1986
when it became the Rover Group. Leyland was a
British manufacturer of vehicles and was
known by the abbreviated name BLMC which stands
for British Leyland Motor Corporation Ltd. In
1975, a new holding company known as BL, British
Leyland Ltd, was formed by the government.
British Leyland Ltd incorporated a good share of
the motor industry owned by Britain.

Leyland Motor Corporation and British Motor
Holdings merged together to form British Leyland
Motor Corporation Ltd (BLMC). British Motor
Holdings were the largest car manufacturer in
the United Kingdom but they were struggling to
keep afloat and the government hoped that the
expertise of the successful Leyland Motor
Corporation could help them to regain strength
and stability. BLMC produced all types of
vehicles including buses, trucks and cars. The
merger meant that most of the vehicle industry
owned by Britain was incorporated - almost one
hundred companies. Alongside the production of
vehicles, BLMC also produced other products and
materials including refrigerators, construction
equipment and metal casting. The merger resulted
in Britain's biggest car manufacturer. British
Motor Holding had produced very successful car
models including the Morris Minor, Austin
Cambridge, Morris Oxford, Austin Maxi, Austin
1800, Austin 3 litre, Mini, Austin/Morris
110/1300. However, there were no plans to
develop these models further, or to redesign or
replace them. A new chairman was appointed to
British Leyland Motor Corporation Ltd, his name
was Donald Stokes and he came from the position
of chairman at Leyland Motor Corporation. Donald
Stokes established the fact that new models had
to be designed and produced quickly.
The Morris Marina (Leyland Marina / Morris 1.7)
was introduced which became one of the most
popular selling vehicles during the 70s,
however, despite high sales, the Morris Marina
reflected poorly on Leyland and it was later
described as one of the worst cars made during
The Austin Allegro was produced up until 1983,
it was a small family car.
Financial crisis hit and the Labour Government
created a new holding company called British
Leyland Limited - abbreviated to BL. The company
was divided into four areas including Leyland
Cars, Leyland Truck and Bus, Leyland Special
Products and Leyland International.
Car of the Year was given to Rover SD1 exec car.
1977 A new
Chief Executive by the name of Sir Michael
Edwardes was appointed. Leyland Cars was split
into two divisions - Austin Morris which
included MG, and Jaguar Rover Triumph. Range
Rover and Land Rover later became the Land Rover
Group followed later by the merging of BLCV and
the Land Rover Group to form Land Rover Leyland.
Austin Metro was launched, originally known by
the name of Mini Metro - this was a small
economical car which effectively replaced the
mini. The Austin Metro proved to be very popular
during the 1980s.
division was renamed the Austin Rover Group and
a partnership with Honda commenced.
Austin Montego was produced - a mid-size four
door saloon car.
1986 Name was
changed from BL to Rover Group.
Vehicles (the truck division) merged with Dutch
DAF company creating DAF NV. In Britain the
company was recognized by the name Leyland DAF.
