What models and types of cars and automobiles does the Jeep motor car company produce?

1940
The US Army required a four wheel drive vehicle, within 49 days, in preparation for army use in World War II. They invited 135 companies to help fulfil this request but only two companies offered their assistance - American Bantam Cars and Willys-Overland. The deadline of 49 days was very tight and Willys wasn't able to produce the required vehicle this quickly. However the Bantam Car Company, with the request of the American Army, took on a designer by the name of Karl Probst. The Company was struggling financially so Karl Probst worked on the project without pay initally. His work commenced on 17th July, 1940. Karl Probst planned the design of the Bantam Reconnaissance Car within two days and the plans to the US Army. They decided that the vehicle itself was suitable but the engine wasn't. The US Army passed the Bantam design to Willys and Ford to further develop and produce. They didn't feel that Bantam would be  capable of supplying them with enough vehicles so they used Bantam to help with the production of heavy duty trailers. Willys and Ford created motor types known as the Willys Quad and Ford Pygmy. Ford were allowed to produce vehicles based upon Willy's plans and design because so many vehicles had to be produced ready for the Second World War that Willys granted Ford permission to do so. Between them, they produced approximately 18% of wheeled military vehicles made in the US for war purposes. The Soviet Red Army and Great Britain helped with the production of military jeeps. This period also saw the design of the amphibious jeep which could be used on both land and water!

1941
The first off-road vehicle, or SUV, was introduced in the year of 1941. This particular jeep was known as the Willys Jeep. The design and creation of the off-road Willys Jeep made quite an impact of the history of the car industry as it instigated the start of the four-wheel drive vehicles which are widely recognized and very popular today! The Willys Jeep influenced production and design, and encouraged other market leaders to further develop their own vehicles. This Jeep, the Willys MB (Bantam Cars), was later recognized as the iconic Second World War Jeep. It was used as a US Army Jeep during WWII and it was produced from 1941-1945. The vehicle was impressive as it enabled soldiers to travel across land effectively as it could be driven across even the most difficult of terrain whilst carrying a number of people and goods. The vehicle was in fact often referred to as a 'Jeep Carrier'.

1943
The trade name Jeep was officially given to Willys-Overland in 1943 as they had consistently designed and developed the vehicle.

1950
Jeep worked on their underwater design - a vehicle that could be used to travel through water for short periods of time.

1953
Kaiser Motors took over from Willys, and later renamed their company Kaiser-Jeep.

1965
The Jeep Motor Car Company created the M715 1.25 ton truck which was used for military purposes, especially in Vietnam. Kia now continues the production of this vehicle.

1970
American Motors Corporation took over from Kaiser-Jeep

1987
Chrysler Corporation took over from American Motors Corporation (AMC), changing to DaimlerChrysler shortly afterwards, then to Chrysler Group LLC.
