After more than 3 years in China, Roland Gumpert returned to Germany. Back in Germany, he became head of sales and marketing responsible for the development of the Audi and VW joint enterprise. Shortly after his return to Germany, Roland Meyer asked him to assist in building a prototype sports car. Audi agreed to Gunperts involvement with the condition, if they eventually successfully developed a new sports car it would not be a prototype but a production car. Company GMG Sportwagenmanufaktur Altenburg GmbH was founded in 2004. The first car designs were drawn by Marco Vanetta after the technical guidelines were defined.
