The history of the Daihatsu motor car company can be traced back to 1907 when Hatsudoki Seizo Co Ltd was founded, with the Daihatsu brand name being introduced in 1951. From 1951 to 1958 Daihatsu only built three wheelers until introducing its first four wheeler in 1958. From the beginning Daihatsu specialized in small capacity passenger cars and four wheel drive off roader's, the company still makes these cars but is now controlled by Toyota. Daihatsu has been greatly involved with the production of hybrid electric vehicles of which they have produced various ones including pavilion cars, golf carts, DBC-1, Fellow Max kei car. Daihatsu were part of the Public Rent and Electric Towncar program, abbreviated to PREET. This program allowed those who were registered to use the car. Due to a significant drop in sales since the year of 2007, Daihatsu decided to pull out of Europe by 2013. Sales decreased so dramatically due to the strength of the of the Japanese Yen increasing prices beyond the competition.
