Founding of the Chevrolet motor car company
The Chevrolet Company was founded on November 8th 1911 by Louis Chevrolet and former GM founder William C Durant. Alfred Sloan positioned Chevrolet to sell a line of mainstream vehicles, these were to compete against Henry Ford's Model T in the 1920's. Chevrolet is now a brand owned by the General Motors Company who acquired Chevrolet in 1917. Chevrolet is General Motor's highest selling brand. 1911: Chevrolet named after a Swiss Louis Joseph Chevrolet raised in France.
1913: Chevrolet uses its bowtie logo for the first time. Durant was also in the process of setting up facilities in Toronto, Canada for producing Chevrolet's. During a luncheon meting with Colonel Sam McLaughlin in New York who manufactured McLaughlin Buick cars, McLaughlin agreed to design bodies for Chevrolet to be produced in his Canadian production line.
1916: Chevrolet became profitable enough for Durant to be able to buy a majority of shares in GM.
1917: Durant became president of General Motors and Chevrolet merged into GM and became a separate division.
1918: Chevrolet introduces the Model D. Australia builds Chevrolet bodies in local assembly plants.
1920: Chevrolet's were marketed and sold in Trinidad and Tobago.
1924: Argentina import Chevrolet Double Phaeton models.
1925: To reduce costs in the Argentine market, General Motors decides to manufacture in Argentina.
1926: Newly created General Motors (Australia) Pty Ltd was established producing Chevrolets.
1931: General Motors (Australia) Pty Ltd merges with Holden Motor Body Builders creating General Motors Holden's with production of various GM products including Chevrolet.
1942: Last Chevrolet built in Argentina.
1946: Production recommenced post war.
1948: Chevrolet produces trucks in Venezuela in Caracas.
1949: Australian Chevrolets assembled from parts imported from Chevrolet in Canada.
1957: Chevrolet designs and builds it's first fuel injected engine.
1959: Argentina manufacturing plats are enlarged and build cars, pick up's and trucks.
1960: In Argentina the first Chevrolet pick up is introduced on the 25th January.
1962: Chevrolet production in Chile began.
1963: 1 in 10 cars sold in the United States was a Chevrolet.
1964: Vauxhall Motors and Holden derivatives were being built under the Chevrolet name in South Africa.
1968: Last full year of Chevrolet production in Australia.
1974: Neal and Massey give up GM franchise in Trinidad and Tobago so Chevrolet brand is dropped.
1979: Production from Caracas moves to a plant in Valencia purchased from Chrysler.
1980: Chevrolets built by Colombian Automotive Factory SA in Colombia.
1982: Chevrolet brand name dropped in South Africa in favour of Opel.
1986: GM decides to leave South Africa, a local South African group buys out GM's South African operations and renames the company Delta Motor Corporation.
2001: GM decide to re-enter South Africa buying the whole of Delta and bring back Chevrolet.
2005: In Europe mainstream models from GM Daewoo were re branded as Chevrolets.
